Alternative Weekends are quarterly experiences that encompass the essence of Alternative Breaks by providing comprehensive educational workshops and direct service opportunities to the UCSD community, ranging from students, alumni, and UCSD staff. Not only do participants have the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of social justice issues pertaining to San Diego, but also to understand the backbone of Alternative Breaks culture, such as the 8 components of a quality Alternative Break.
The dream for Alternative Weekends is to grow our connections with the local community by working with and engaging in sustainable relationships within our home community, and in turn fostering greater knowledge of what is going on in our own “backyard.”
Alternative Weekends raises awareness by providing the UCSD community with opportunities to learn about San Diego non-profit organizations and local social justice issues through active participation and a holistic education utilizing the Break Away model.
To provide more accessible Alternative Break opportunities to students and deepen community partnerships with local organizations.
What does an Alternative Weekend trip look like?
Alternative Weekends are created and directed by our Alternative Weekends Chairs, all of whom have had previous leadership experience in Alternative Breaks. Trips are facilitated and site lead with the help of volunteer Breakers currently serving on the Leadership Team.
