PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: To provide support to student service leaders leading national and international Alternative Break service trips. Alternative Breaks are student-led trips and initiatives.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF A COMMUNITY ADVISOR: 1) Leadership development
Facilitate leadership development of the service leaders and student participants
Establish and maintain communication with service leaders throughout the year. Frequency of communication is determined between advisor and service leaders.
Attend pre-trip group meetings when possible. The advisor is encouraged to attend at least one group meeting per month to remain updated.
Keep an eye on the big picture- work with service leaders to facilitate all aspects of an Alternative Break, including education, fundraising, reflection and reorientation.
Work with the service leaders to maintain positive group dynamics to ensure all trip participants feel comfortable and safe at all times.
Encourage personal and professional growth of all trip participants.
Act as a role model of a working professional who values participation in lifelong service.
Provide available resources to student leaders such as local volunteering, training, and fundraising opportunities.
Provide pre-trip, on-trip, and post-trip planning support to the service leaders as needed.
3) Health, Safety and Liability
Attend mandatory emergency procedure, liability, and risk management training on March 3rd, 2018.
Actively monitor safety concerns before and during the trip. Ensure service leaders are leading in a way that promotes health and safety of all participants and maintains integrity of the program.
Carry a first aid kit and emergency contact information at all times.
Support service leaders in situations of policy violation, including the alcohol and drug policy if necessary.
When possible, remain with the group on all outings and projects.
4) Assistance with Fundraising
Assist service leaders in the development of a trip fundraising plan.
